The comeback is the story
Joshua Weathersbee earned dual BFAs — in Painting and in Crafts — from Delta State University, where his senior painting thesis ran to 100 paintings, shown across two venues in Cleveland, Mississippi at the same time.
In the two years after college, he sold close to 150 landscape oil paintings. Collectors called him out of the blue and stopped by to see the work. One buyer took twenty paintings. Another took twelve. Delta Magazine ran a feature on him. He'd studied painting in Florence and Rome for a summer, and for a moment it looked like the straight line every young artist hopes for.
Then he walked away from it. The landscapes were selling — and he was done with landscapes. He stepped away from painting for about ten years, working as a janitor and in a factory, and has now returned to the studio.
He's back now, working from his studio in Ballinger, Texas. Color and minimalism have always driven his work, and his focus now is still lifes centered on serious color relationships, made by hand, one painting at a time. Every piece on this site is a one-of-one original — when it's gone, it's gone.
His still lifes come out of the color tradition that runs from the Impressionists through Henry Hensche and his students, including George T. Thurmond, Charlie Miller and Robin Durand. He has always been drawn to color, from Rothko and Agnes Martin to Sorolla and Rembrandt.
No two pieces are alike, and no piece comes twice. Every painting is equal to the last and completely different from it — that's the nature of the work. When a piece finds its collector, it's gone for good, and what comes next will be something new.
From the studio
Every painting starts as a surface, a brush, and a question about color. Here's a look inside the studio in Ballinger, Texas.

Small-format studies exploring high-contrast color dynamics — the core of the work.
Larger pieces develop over weeks — layers, revisions, and the patience to let a painting tell you when it's done.
